It will be a lot easier for someone over 55 to get employment if they don’t need health care benefits from their employer.   Everbody wins.

Hurry Up!

October 20, 2009 Leave a comment

If you’re a job seeker, better hurry up since the job market closes up for the most part around November 15th.  That’s not to say that jobs are not won during that time, but it becomes harder because decision makers want to “wait and see” what the New Year brings before making hiring decisions.

Search for a job with an “employed” mentality

September 24, 2009 Leave a comment

When people are pressing to get hired because they are out of work, hiring managers recognize this sense of urgency.  That puts you at a competitive disadvantage when competing against an employed person.  If you were employed and interviewed for a job where the ‘fit’ was not right, you would go back to work the next day.  Take that attitude when you are job searching whether you are employed or unemployed.

Know your value by conveying metrics

September 8, 2009 1 comment

If you cannot articulate the value you have provided to the companies that have employed you, how can you expect to have a hiring manager know whether he/she can afford to pay you to fix the problems you will be asked to solve if hired? Resumes and interviews get better results when you can provide measurable accomplishments rather descriptions of the things you have done.

Need a job? It’s not about you.

August 22, 2009 Leave a comment

It’s not about you… You may the one in need of a job, but you are not the one with a problem.  The person who hires you has the problem.  So stop thinking ‘me’ and think ‘them’.  People get hired because they convince the hiring manager they are the best solution to the manager’s problem(s).  If you want a job, start thinking and communicating to people about the kinds of problems you can fix better than anyone because of your experience and accomplishments.

Stop Commiserating and Get Moving!

Start thinking about why someone would hire you, rather than how unfair life tends to be.  This is time for action.  During the job search you are self-employed as the head of sales and marketing—for yourself.  Think AND act like the great salesperson you must be in order to compete for your next job.

Voice Mail Abyss

August 18, 2009 Leave a comment

You can call a prospective employer as many times as you’d like in order to connect, but only leave one voice mail message a week.  The best time to call someone would be early in the morning or after 5pm.  They’re most likely to pick up the phone themselves outside of normal business hours.
